In February 2001, the Agile Manifesto was published. A group of visionary software experts came together in Snowbird, Utah, USA. They all had experienced that the software industry was heading in a completely wrong direction with exceeded budgets, projects that were never finished and poor quality.
In each their own way they had tried to find other solutions, and now they would try to find a common ground.
After 3 days of intense discussions, the Agile Manifesto and the 12 agile principles saw the light of day. One can truly say that the world hasn’t been the same since.
No one in the software industry today is untouched by the agile mindset. Countless daily stand-up meetings, sprint demos, retrospectives have been held in the 20 years that have passed, and software has been designed and implemented in ways that would have seemed unthinkable 20 years ago.
So now it seems like a good time to look back. Has the agile way of working really made a difference? Are we so much better at making software today than we were 20 years ago? Frequently we read about big IT scandals, the stress in the industry and that a poor working environment is more prevalent than ever in IT jobs.
So, although the agile manifesto promised both software on time and better working conditions, one can wonder if the promise has been fulfilled?
In this presentation, we go a step further and look at where the agile mindset actually changed the world and where it has gone less well and what lies behind the successes, failures and all in between.
Bent Jensen has been on the journey since the beginning. As head of the development department at the SAS Institute Denmark, he was one of the early pioneers who introduced agile methods at the same time as the Agile Manifesto was written. Since then, he has worked with countless Danish and American companies and advised and helped them make their agile processes work.
